CUSTOMS & TRADITIONS:
FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADULUPA
By Aislinn Chapotelle
The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe marks the apparition of the Virgin Mary to St. Juan Deigo on December 12th and her request that he go to the bishop and request a church to be built on Tepeyac Hill. What followed was that Juan was told to climb the barren mountain and gather the sign that she would leave for him, which was a multitude of perfect roses growing on the rocky ground. Juan took the roses wrapped in his tilma to the bishop as a sign and when he dropped the roses from his tilma, the image of Our Lady appeared on the tilma that Juan Deigo was wearing. This image is a pictograph that spoke volumes to the Mexican people and subsequently a mass conversion took place in Mexico. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron saint of Mexico.
The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated by large processions of a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe throughout the streets of Mexico. The festivities involve going to mass, music festivals, fireworks and feasting.
