OVERVIEW OF ETHNIC CULTURAL & BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
MASCULINITY VS. FEMININITY
By Danielle Siggelkow
Although roles are more differentiated in Mexico, Canada and Mexico are actually fairly close in this particular value dimension, with Mexico at 69 and Canada at 52 (Hofstede Centre, n.d.). Locals consider Mexico “a matriarchal society where the “Mother” is the most respected figure in society (Global Affairs Canada, 2014). However, women are still expected to occupy traditional roles and “should be in charge of household duties – even if they hold a full-time position” (Global Affairs Canada, 2014). The roles are changing in Mexico, as women are expected more and more to contribute financially to the household and work outside the home. However, this causes tension and conflict between deeply ingrained traditions and values and new and emerging roles and expectations.
